NTT Docomo, Inc. (Docomo) and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) today announced that they have joined carrier SK Telecom Co., Ltd. (SK Telecom) in a joint 6G trial with the world’s leading vendors and global carriers. and Rohde & Schwarz GmbH & Co. KG, a manufacturer of high-frequency, high-performance measurement equipment.
The two companies join existing partner companies1,2 including Fujitsu Limited (Fujitsu), NEC Corporation (NEC), Nokia, Ericsson, and Keysight Technologies (Keysight Technologies), and join Docomo and NTT Expanding joint efforts with seven companies to develop frequency bands that may be used for 6G communications.
The details of the collaboration between the two newly added companies are as follows. As part of a technology partnership with Docomo and NTT, SK Telecom will participate in a demonstration experiment that uses AI technology to adjust wireless interfaces to various propagation environments, which Docomo is jointly conducting with NTT and Nokia. participate. Going forward, we will leverage SK Telecom’s expertise as a carrier and ecosystem builder, similar to DoCoMo, to expand the trial to environments closer to the intended use. Additionally, Rohde & Schwarz uses measurement system design techniques with channel models to evaluate new wireless sensing solutions beyond mobile communication technologies, and uses measurements in real-world environments and channel models to evaluate wireless sensing performance. Evaluate.
Separately, Docomo and NTT also announced the results of demonstration experiments4,5 that utilized new wireless communication technologies and AI that have been conducted since June 2022. This time, we obtained the following new results.
Nokia: Trial of radio access technology for 140GHz
Results In Japan, beamforming tests using Nokia’s 140 GHz wireless system prototype and a 128-element phased array antenna6 were successfully conducted, with various The effectiveness of phased array beam steering in different directions was confirmed. Future Plans Further Testing The research team will focus on more specific applications to confirm the practicality of sub-terahertz (sub-THz) signals7 in indoor environments.
Fujitsu: Distributed MIMO trial at 100GHz and 300GHz
Results Using Fujitsu’s 100GHz phased array antenna prototype and wireless circuit, we succeeded in acquiring propagation path information equivalent to a distributed MIMO system. Future plans We will carry out simulations and analyze shield resistance, distributed MIMO characteristics, etc.
Keysight Technologies: Architecture for sub-THz propagation measurements, propagation measurements and channel model formulation
Results By combining an 896-element ultra-multi-element antenna developed by NTT with a received signal analyzer developed by Keysight Technologies, we succeeded in creating a device that visualizes the spatial arrival of sub-THz radio waves in real time. Additionally, by combining the SISO channel sounder developed mainly by Docomo with the signal transceiver built by Keysight Technologies, it has become possible to observe the temporal arrival of sub-THz signals with ultra-high resolution. . Docomo and his NTT successfully used this equipment group to conduct wireless propagation experiments for ultra-broadband communications in the sub-THz band. Future Plans The channel model with dynamic tracking capabilities in real-world environments will be further developed for the design of efficient ultra-broadband communications. -Broadband 6G communication system.
Docomo and NTT will continue to conduct demonstration experiments in collaboration with major domestic and international vendors and overseas carriers. The two companies will continue to further expand their partners, promote various initiatives that leverage their respective strengths, and advance research and development of various mobile communication technologies. Through these initiatives, Docomo and NTT aim to accelerate research and development that will contribute to the global standardization and commercialization of 6G.
The various trials listed above will be exhibited at the Docomo booth at MWC Barcelona 2024, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain from February 26th.
