Ericsson ERIC recently announced that Vodafone has decided to deploy Ericsson’s Interleaved AIR 3218 antenna solution to expand 5G coverage in Germany. The first antenna system has already been deployed in a multi-storey car park in Düsseldorf, and ERIC aims to have more than 500 systems installed across Germany by the end of 2026.
In Germany, data traffic is growing by more than 30% every year. Vodafone aims to meet this growing data demand by integrating innovative solutions from Ericsson. However, limited rooftop space poses challenges in finding suitable locations for antenna installations. Moreover, the available locations do not meet the static criteria of network planners.
Rooftop mounted antennas are subject to wind forces that exert pressure on the surface. As more cellular antennas are installed, the wind pressure is amplified by the increased number of antennas, resulting in increased pressure on the surface. Many rooftops lack the structural integrity and wind resistance to be upgraded with active 5G antennas.
Ericsson’s new compact antenna solution effectively solves these issues. In our design, the active antennas are installed behind the passive antennas, reducing the overall space required on the mast and rooftop. Antenna-integrated radio and multi-band passive antenna technology are combined in one solution, minimizing the physical footprint. This enables 5G networks to increase capacity and coverage without increasing the site footprint.
The Interleaved AIR 3218 is an ideal solution for congested urban areas where 5G deployment is affected by building regulations, planning laws, and structural issues. The solution supports high data rates of over 1 gigabit per second and can cover a radius of up to 1 kilometer, ensuring efficient 5G coverage in urban areas. The compact active-passive design simplifies the site upgrade process. The solution supports low- to mid-band frequencies, increasing capacity and providing premium services to end users.
The solution addresses the technical challenges of expanding 5G in urban areas and also focuses on improving operational efficiency for service providers, factors that will have a positive impact on Ericsson’s commercial prospects and enhance the company’s competitive position in the wireless equipment industry.
The company’s shares have risen 16.7% over the past year, compared with industry growth of 47.5%.
