Telecom giant Ericsson and prestigious educational institution Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) today announced an exciting partnership centered on AI, computing and wireless research. Together, these organizations have signed two pivotal agreements that pave the way for joint research centered on pioneering AI and distributed computing technologies, particularly in the area of his 6G research.
An enlightening symposium on radio and networking research was held, convening thought leaders from both Ericsson Research Institute and IIT Kharagpur. This was a great opportunity for both parties to delve into the future of networking and communications and speculate about the advances that may come.
Edge management and AI-driven policies are integral to Ericsson’s vision for 6G networks, with AI playing a key role. This research field is of common interest with his IIT Kharagpur, and this partnership provides an opportunity to dramatically advance basic and applied research in the wireless field.
Virendra Kumar Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur, hailed this partnership with Ericsson as transformative in making India the epicenter of technological innovation. “His 6G network integrated with artificial intelligence will enable AI-powered applications to run faster and more efficiently,” he said. He elaborated on his IIT Kharagpur’s aspirations to strengthen the world of various aspects of radio access technology and networks, core networks, RF and device technology, VLSI design, and other key industries.
Magnus Frodi, head of Ericsson Research, echoed similar sentiments and expressed excitement about the partnership with IIT Kharagpur. “We are excited to partner with IIT Kharagpur and look forward to joint research in fundamental areas as well as translational research for future network platforms,” he said. He also shared Ericsson’s ambitious 6G vision, which aims to seamlessly blend the physical and digital worlds and improve human life.
Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India, said: “Ericsson is poised to lead in 6G innovation and is making significant R&D investments in India, in line with our commitment to India.” he said with a
The conference brought together some of the brightest minds in the field, including Professor Suvra Sekhar Das, Professor Debarati Sen and other faculty members from IIT Kharagpur. Dr. Magnus Frodi, head of the Ericsson Institute, and other heads of Ericsson.
These organizations announced two important projects as part of their joint research efforts. These are compute offloading and resource optimization in edge computing, which aim to optimize resources and sustainable distributed and edge computing technologies. Additionally, the RL-based beamforming for JCAS project explores AI methodologies for collaborative communication and sensing. This partnership between Ericsson and his IIT Kharagpur will undoubtedly bring remarkable research advances to the future of telecommunications.
