Ericsson and Taiwanese telecom company signed this 5G-A deal during MWC 2024
Swedish vendor Ericsson and Taiwanese carrier Chunghwa Telecom have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote 5G technology in Taiwan, the former said in a release.
The agreement, signed at MWC 2024, calls for collaboration in 5G advanced technologies, with a focus on augmented reality (XR), time-critical communications, industrial automation, 5G RedCap, AI-driven network energy-saving solutions, and intelligent network operations. It is intended to strengthen. The partnership will also set the stage for early research and development of next-generation mobile technologies, the vendor said.
This collaboration specifically targets the advancement and commercialization of 3GPP Release 18 related technologies. Rel-18 is scheduled to be officially frozen in his March 2024 and represents the beginning of 5G advanced technology. These technological advances are expected to serve as the foundation for future 6G networks and facilitate a seamless transition between 5G and 6G.
In addition to supporting technical requirements for XR, 5G RedCap devices, and network energy efficiency, AI and machine learning (ML) will play a key role in 5G advanced technologies, according to the Nordic vendor. Chunghwa Telecom successfully implemented Ericsson’s AI-powered smart energy solution, saving up to 34% in potential energy consumption without compromising user experience, Ericsson added.
Alex Qian, president of network technology at Chunghwa Telecom, said: “By jointly exploring the latest 5G advanced technologies, this MoU further solidifies our commitment to building a first-class sustainable network that enables the transformation to a low-carbon economy. .” “
“Our advanced AI and ML technologies will further enable intelligent network operations and optimize energy efficiency. We are committed to helping people reach their full potential,” said David Chou, president of Ericsson Taiwan.
Chunghwa Telecom had launched commercial 5G services in July 2020 using Ericsson equipment.
In December 2023, Chunghwa Telecom entered into an agreement to use Singaporean operator Singtel’s cloud platform, Paragon, to provide integrated services combining 5G network slicing and cloud applications.
Singtel said the two companies will partner to facilitate the rapid adoption of 5G Standalone (SA) innovative application services.
According to the pair, by leveraging Singtel Paragon, Chunghwa Telecom will build a service platform that leverages 5G’s network slicing capabilities, deploy multi-access edge computing at scale, and leverage the market to create innovative It will be able to promote and provide 5G applications to Taiwan’s industrial sector. companies.
