After Elon Musk criticized the Hamptons’ notoriously poor cell service at a high-profile event and in comments to Page Six, the owner of The Capri hotel where Musk stayed said he agreed with the Tesla CEO.
“The room I stayed in was [the] “The Isle of Capri was very small,” he said, noting that “the WiFi is in dire need of an upgrade, as is cell service in general in the Hamptons.”
Rooms at the Southampton hotel, known for its pool parties and popular Ketchie Beach restaurant, cost about $1,000 a night.
Over the years, the trendy hotel has hosted events attended by celebrities like Howard Stern and Jennifer Lopez, as well as politicians including Nancy Pelosi, Governor Kathy Hockle, Mayor Eric Adams and Attorney General Letitia James.
Mayank Dwivedi, a co-owner of the hotel, told Page Six that he understands Musk’s complaints about the quality of WiFi in the East End, and expressed interest in working with the billionaire entrepreneur to address the long-standing issue in the upscale neighborhood.
“Some people come out East to unplug and unwind, but Elon and the biggest names in the world have to do business and the internet needs to be brought up to 21st century standards,” Dwivedi said. “I’d love to work with him to modernize the entire network. It’s a dream come true.”
As for the “small” rooms, we hear Dwivedi plans to turn the place into a five-star resort.
The SpaceX founder was in town for Michael Milken’s annual Hamptons Prostate Cancer Foundation gala and during a one-on-one conversation with Milken, he complained about the area’s cell phone service in front of fellow billionaires Julia Koch, Bill Ackman, Stephen Schwarzman, Rob Citron and Patrice Motsepe.
