It’s been nearly five years since I last wrote about eero. Back in the pre-COVID era, the company made some of the fastest and most reliable networking hardware I’ve ever tested. Perhaps that’s why it caught Amazon’s attention in 2019.
While you may still be reluctant to make Amazon hardware the backbone of your connected home for privacy reasons, it’s no secret that eero hardware is just as fast and just as reliable as it was years ago. There’s no denying that it’s just as good.
what is that?
eero Max 7 is a scalable mesh router system available as a single device or as a 2-pack or 3-pack. A 3-pack can cover up to 7,500 square feet of space. This is the fastest system eero has shipped, with tri-band connectivity that all broadcasts the same 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands (meaning everything you currently use will work with it) , which doubles the available bandwidth on WiFi 6E systems.
What does that mean to you? This is fast. Probably faster than you need. However, if you’re paying for more than 2GB of fiber internet, be careful.
don’t cut the cord
These shiny towers have two 10GbE Ethernet ports and two 2.5GbE Ethernet ports. Each. This gives you up to nine Ethernet ports (you’ll need at least one or two ports to connect an Ethernet cable), allowing you to wire all the bandwidth in your home.
This is an unprecedented number of ports (most enterprises only have zero or a few additional ports on their wireless hubs). However, it can make a big difference in overall network speed. Simply connect the devices that need the most bandwidth to eliminate local wireless interference and free up space for other devices in the area.
Granted, you won’t get the highest speeds unless you have a wired connection to your main router, but just connecting it to your laptop (or game console, or TV) will give you a huge speed boost, as opposed to a wireless connection. But that doesn’t mean the Max 7 is a slouch when it comes to wireless.
code?No “code” required to go anywhere
eero was one of the first companies to bring a whole-home mesh WiFi 7 system to market. Not only does it support new wireless standards (not that there isn’t hardware available to take advantage of it…yet), but it also supports impressive multi-gig network speeds of up to 9.4 GBps (wired) and 4.3 GBps (wireless). Does that mean I’ll get almost 10 GBps for the whole house? No.But it is do This means that with eero Max 7, you get more of the bandwidth you pay for across all the devices in your home.
It also has great synergy with other Amazon smart devices. If you have a new Echo, the eero network will start serving it as a wireless extender. This is especially true considering that bedrooms in the corners of the house are often the hardest to receive a reliable network signal, and these rooms are often where Echo speakers are installed. It’s a useful trick.
Some analysts believe that the Max 7’s overall speed is slightly lower than its competitors. While that may be true (I’m not here to disprove the raw performance numbers, as all my speed tests are pretty unscientific), I don’t think anyone using an eero system can I challenge you to feel dissatisfied with its overall speed. The eero Max 7 isn’t just faster than any WiFi 6 system I’ve ever tested; reliable. There are no dropped connections, failed handoffs, or dead zones.my whole house soaking wet With fast wireless connectivity.
Are you having all those weird issues with your connected devices? Where does it get stripped or disconnected? In the end, it turned out that the culprit wasn’t the device, but his 6E network hardware I was using (sorry for my rant at his poor Nanoleaf light). Are the wheels of death all spinning while streaming NFL games? Gone. Once you have a reliable network as the backbone of your wired home, everything else will work fine. That is wonderful.
nickel and dime
Of course, if you’re someone who likes to comb through network statistics, you’ll have to pay even more than you’re already paying for the hardware itself. The eero app is great and has a lot of basic information about your network, so you can check your speeds and even group your devices by type. However, you can use VPNs, password managers (including 1Password, which is great), ad blocking, threat monitoring, content filtering, app blocking, and internet backup (you can assign failover networks such as mobile hotspots). If you want , you’ll have to pay $10 a month or $100 a year for eero Plus.
you don’t have If you don’t subscribe, you’ll get reminders throughout the app every time you try to do something deeper than just monitor your network. Want to take a closer look at wireless analytics for a specific device? Paywall. Do you want to monitor your activity? Paywall. You get the picture.you do If you buy an eero Max 7 system, you get a six-month subscription for free…but for hardware that costs over $1,700, you’d want high-end features bundled with it.
conclusion
That’s not a typo. A single unit of eero Max 7 costs $599, and a 3-pack costs $1,759 before discounts. That’s a surprising amount of money to pay for high-speed network hardware.Indeed, it is Really, very good Although it’s not networking hardware, you can get a robust 6E system for less and still be almost as happy.
So why buy the eero Max 7? Because you’re the type of tech geek? do We want to future-proof our networks with hardware that is faster than the current generation and improves the performance of WiFi 7 devices (as they come out). There are an embarrassing number of devices connected, and you’ll need all the available bandwidth. Because we value reliability above all else.
Plus, the hardware looks really cool.
