
Digicel Samoa will soon launch 5G services in the island nation. The telco announced on Monday that it had received conditional approval from the Samoan government to launch 5G technology and is working with Nokia to upgrade its mobile phone base stations. With these upgrades, the company said it is ready to offer faster connectivity to its customers.

Cell phone tower site upgrade
According to the company, the upgrade will begin with mobile towers in Samoa’s capital Apia CBD (Central Business District) to enable Digicel Samoa to introduce 5G capabilities to its customers while maintaining its existing 4G network.

The company said Nokia’s cutting-edge equipment will enable it to not only maintain but also improve coverage across the country by increasing mobile internet speeds and adopting innovative technologies such as 5G. Ta.

Additionally, the company said its upgraded cell towers in Apia and across the country will match cybersecurity standards defined for 5G to ensure the security and resilience of critical national infrastructure.
According to an official release, the telco will deploy Nokia’s AirScale portfolio on top of its existing 4G network. The AirScale portfolio reportedly supports all deployment scenarios and frequency bands.

Digicel Samoa is part of Digicel Pacific, which was acquired by Australia’s Telstra. Digicel Pacific also operates in five other markets: Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Nauru, Tonga and Vanuatu.
