Digicel Samoa announced on Monday that it has received conditional approval from the Samoan government to launch 5G technology and is already working with Nokia to upgrade its mobile phone base stations.
Digicel Samoa said the upgrade will begin with its mobile phone towers in Apia’s central business district. The telco plans to deploy Nokia’s AirScale non-standalone (NSA) 5G to overlay the technology onto its existing 4G network.
Digicel Samoa CEO Anthony Seuseu said in a statement: “Nokia’s cutting-edge equipment will increase mobile internet speeds and expand coverage across the country by adopting innovative technologies like 5G. “We will be able to not only maintain it, but also improve it.”
Suseu added that the upgraded mobile phone base stations in Apia and across the island will be in line with cybersecurity standards defined for 5G to ensure the safety and resilience of critical national infrastructure.
“This partnership underscores our commitment to maintaining the integrity of communications infrastructure while advancing 5G technology,” he said.
Seuseu did not say when the service would launch, but said, “With the conditional approval from regulators to deploy 5G technology, we look forward to a new era of connectivity with a variety of applications.” We will notify you shortly. ”
