Deutsche Telekom announced that its 5G network now covers 96% of Germany’s population
Deutsche Telekom (DT) plans to launch 5G standalone (5G SA) services in Germany next year, the company said in a statement.
Srini Gopalan, CEO of Telekom Deutschland, DT’s domestic carrier, said in a review of this year’s network performance that DT’s domestic carrier will offer 5G SA to residential customers. He said he is aiming for
The executive noted that Deutsche Telekom’s business customers are already using the technology with features such as live TV transmission of media and network slicing in 5G campus networks for industry and research.
The company also highlighted that its 5G network currently covers 96% of Germany’s population. Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network has 80,000 5G antennas, of which more than 10,000 antennas are transmitted in the 3.6 GHz band in more than 800 cities and municipalities nationwide.
Gopolan said DT’s 5G technology currently offers download speeds of up to 1Gbps, and the carrier expects 5G to reach 99% of Germany’s population by 2025.
The executive also noted that DT, in collaboration with Nokia and Fujitsu, began deploying Open RAN (O-RAN) in Germany in December. The carrier expects to have 3,000 O-RAN compatible antennas by the end of 2026.
Regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI), Deutsche Telekom said it is currently using this technology to expand its network. For example, AI can help in network planning using T-Cars to measure and calculate optimal fiber expansion routes, and in mobile communications where carriers analyze and assess cell usage and capacity utilization. The German carrier is currently working with SK Telekom to develop its own large-scale language model for carrier-specific applications.
Claudia Nemato, Director of Technology and Innovation at Deutsche Telekom, said: We want to educate people about both. It is also a technology pioneer. By developing and using human-centered AI and involving customers in it. ”
Deutsche Telekom announced in August that 83% of its 5G mobile communications hubs nationwide are already connected with fiber optics.
The news agency also said that more than 10,000 5G mobile sites now have fiber optic connections with 10 gigabit speeds, accounting for about 40% of all 5G mobile radio systems. Deutsche Telekom plans to equip more than 28,000 mobile sites with 10 Gigabit high-speed connections by 2026.
The news agency also highlighted that 5G antennas on the 3.6 GHz frequency are particularly powerful as they are almost exclusively connected to transport networks with 10 Gigabit connections via fiber optics.
The news agency added that the 3.6 GHz frequency band will complement the 5G frequencies in the 700 MHz and 2.1 GHz ranges already used nationally by Deutsche Telekom’s network. The 3.6 GHz frequency ensures especially high download speeds and smooth mobile coverage, especially in densely populated areas, the carrier said.
