marshawn lynch trolls
I don’t have many Steelers-related notes today, so I’ll expand on the rest of the NFL. Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch took time to enjoy the San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl loss by walking around a Las Vegas casino and “saying hi” to 49ers fans with clearly NSFW language.
They may have had to watch their favorite team lose, but at least they have a great story to tell.
49ers OT confusion
Last night’s Super Bowl was the second time the game went to overtime, the other time being the New England Patriots’ 28-3 upset over the Atlanta Falcons. The 49ers seemed completely unprepared, as the then-updated playoff rules essentially guaranteed each team one possession and the possibility of two overtime periods.
According to The Ringers, 49ers players were unaware that the playoffs had different overtime rules than the regular season, as Arif Hasan also said. In the regular season, the game ends if the first team to receive the ball scores a touchdown. Even in the playoffs, the opponent will get the ball back.
The 49ers made the questionable decision to take the overtime kickoff, even though strategically it would have been smarter to kickoff second and get the ball. Just like in overtime in college, in this situation you know exactly what you need to play for. When the Chiefs got the ball back on third down, they knew when they had to go get it on fourth down and win the game with a touchdown.
There was also confusion about what would happen at the end of overtime and why the Chiefs ran the clock down. But Kansas City knew the rules: the game wasn’t over after the first overtime, and the game went into a second OT to halt momentum. In fact, according to Football Zebras, the rules get even wilder from there. He doesn’t have a two-minute warning in the first overtime, but he does in the second overtime.
and There will be “halftime” before the third overtime. And the kickoff basically restarts things, just like going from the second quarter to the third quarter. If, for some reason, the game goes into a fifth overtime, a new coin toss will be held, effectively starting another game.
Internet dunk against JJ Watt
There was at least one Watt in the Super Bowl. JJ Watt had a big presence on his The NFL Today on CBS, participating in several hours of coverage before kickoff as part of the pregame crew. Watt tried to debut his new hairstyle, and the internet certainly took notice.
Watt later tweeted a little teasing the internet’s reaction to his new move.
Watt could have an even bigger role in 2024, as the futures of the program’s key analysts are in doubt, including former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher.
