Viewers are divided over whether a Delta Airlines pilot’s speech that went viral online was appropriate or bizarre.
A video shared by Instagram users aflyguytravels and thecrewlounge on Tuesday shows the captain standing in front of the cabin, holding a telephone receiver and delivering a message over the intercom.
He begins his speech by identifying himself as the passenger’s “servant leader” and asking passengers to pay attention to his announcements.
“Today I’m going to be the captain of a ship… What does that mean?” he can be heard asking the captured audience. “That means I am responsible for the safety of the ship, crew, passengers, cargo, and above all the regulations.”
He went on to mention standard in-flight rules about smoking and wearing seatbelts, which he said were usually shared by flight attendants, before adding a particularly dramatic remark. command and instructions from the flight attendants. Accidents beyond passenger control are an ever-present problem in air travel. Earlier this month, a man on an American Airlines flight was restrained with duct tape by fellow passengers as he tried to open the emergency exit, forcing him to divert. A similar incident occurred on JetBlue, where a combative passenger had to be subdued after an altercation broke out on a flight from London to New York.
Between 2020 and 2021, incidents of passenger misconduct increased by 492%, with 5,973 incidents reported. (Much of that can be attributed to customers refusing to comply with federal mask mandates during the pandemic.) Thankfully, that number is now trending downward, according to Federal Aviation Administration data.
