II’ve been thinking about this too much. Look, if you were to choose the “funniest thing on the internet” to show someone who has never seen anything funny on the internet, he probably would have picked many of the hits from 2010 (QVC Accident) , Otaku Tumble). – Content that readers of the column know later.
So I chose something to return to. Not to sound like a terrible person, but I’m connecting on a level that goes beyond a man accidentally stabbing himself with a ceremonial sword while shopping live on his channel. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. enjoy!
1. Castledown Donkey Derby
It’s my favorite. There was a time when video participants didn’t think about how they would be portrayed. Video camera tape is more likely to biodegrade in a dusty drawer. I’m so glad someone filmed his 1994 Castletown Donkey Derby. It is a lost era of Irish culture, a more innocent time. The plot unfolds like a Shakespearean play. Plus some horny asses.
2. Simon Bird at the 2008 Chortle Student Comedy Awards
One of my favorite stand-up routines is at a student comedy competition. Before he became The Inbetweener, Simon played his bard deconstructing the contest and his place in it, to the point where the whole thing almost went up in flames.
3. Mascot’s Silence

It’s an Instagram account that displays photos of football mascots in silly costumes doing their best to honor the solemn moments before a game. In the words of Lance Armstrong, if you don’t think this is funny, you’re “poor me.”
4. Claudia O’Doherty – Women in Magic
My Australian namesake is the funniest person I know. Everything she’s accomplished since then has been amazing, but I always go back to this gem with Natasia Demetriou from 10 years ago.
5. What does cricket look like to most people?
The sport was a mystery to me until I saw Bluey’s “Cricket” episode. This sketch from a Dutch comedy show captures it perfectly.
6. Domhnall Gleeson – X-MEN
Beautiful sketches from Your Bad Self, a forgotten wonder of Irish sketch shows. Here, baby Domhnall struggles with his inner monologue while working in a clothing store.
7. Nina Katchadourian’s Flemish toilet self-portrait
Before there were edgelords and cake farting people, this was the talk of the internet. It was about a woman who recreated Dutch paintings in aircraft bathrooms. OK, fine, that never happened before, but I still wish there were more like this.
8. Bobby Fingers – Jeff Bezos’ Rowboat
Bobby Fingers has his own thing. It’s very hard to explain this without spoiling it, but just know that it changes genres at least four times and builds to one of the best endings I’ve ever seen. Put it down please.
9. Lewis Cole – F it Up
My favorite music video by one of the greatest musicians of this generation. Most of the many opinions on this are mine. You might want to tell me it’s not interesting enough to be on this list, but I won’t because I’ll listen to this song again and laugh.
10. Sean Locke – Carrot in a Box
In anyone else’s hands, this would have been a completely forgettable filler, but Sean turned it into one of my favorite pieces of television. This was the first movie I watched after I heard he passed away, and I laughed and cried at the same time. It’s just perfect.
