Comcast has announced the first gateway to function as a modem and router that supports both the next generation internet service called DOCSIS 4.0 and Wi-Fi 7.
The gateway, called the XB10, was unveiled at Comcast’s Converge event earlier this week, according to Light Reading.
DOCSIS 4.0 is the latest cable standard that utilizes technical tricks and some fibers to significantly increase the speed of coaxial cables, making them a much faster option than the full fiber-optic networks that more Internet service providers are using. Increase competitiveness. The company launched the service in November in parts of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Atlanta, and expects more markets to come online this year.
The service currently uses a standalone DOCSIS 4.0 modem with Wi-Fi 6E. The XB10 gateway has capabilities beyond a simple modem, including the ability to connect multiple networks.
The XB10 significantly improves the consumer experience by combining the bandwidth provided by DOCSIS 4.0 connectivity in the network with the fast wireless speeds of Wi-Fi 7 in the home. The service brings both faster speeds, the ability to handle more devices, and lower latency for activities like Fortnite and 4K streaming.
“By integrating next-generation technologies like WiFi 7, DOCSIS 4.0, and AI into one device, the XB10 allows Xfinity customers to take full advantage of new advances in smart home technology while simultaneously watching movies and shows. You’ll be able to stream in 4K and play interactively. You’ll be able to play video games, make video calls, and enjoy augmented and virtual reality,” a Comcast spokesperson told Cord Cutters News in an email.
The announcement highlights how Comcast is meeting the growing demand for high-speed internet and data consumption. During the event, Comcast Cable CEO Dave Watson said that five years ago, the company’s average customer used about 200 GB per month, with the top 10% using 700 GB and the top 1% using twice that, or 1. I mentioned that I was using TB strength. .
“The top 10% of users 1707933343 “I looked like the top 1% of people,” Watson said, according to Light Reading. “Today’s superuser will be tomorrow’s mainstream.”
The new modem, called XB10, also includes a new DOCSIS chipset from technology company Broadcom. The new chipset supports standard full duplex (FDX) and extended spectrum (ESD). Comcast plans to focus on FDX, which can offer the same multi-gigabit speeds for downloads and uploads.
According to the report, Comcast says the modem’s Wi-Fi 7 can connect up to 300 devices simultaneously, utilizing three radios with the capacity to connect 100 devices each.
The XB10 is expected to be released later this year. Comcast said it is not disclosing the manufacturer at this time. Pricing will be announced at launch and is expected to be similar to other modem prices.
