Coherent expands production capacity at U.S. and European factories to significantly reduce die costs for InP optoelectronic devices including lasers, detectors, and electronics

PITTSBURGH, March 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Coherent Corporation (NYSE: COHR), a leading provider of compound semiconductors and high-performance optical networking solutions, today established the world’s first 6-inch indium phosphide production capacity. (InP)’s wafer manufacturing will take place at the company’s wafer fabrication facilities in Sherman, Texas, and Järfälla, Sweden. This exciting milestone marks Coherent’s commitment to producing InP optoelectronic devices that are widely used in applications such as coherent optical communications, data communications transceivers, AI interconnects, advanced sensing for consumer electronics and wearables, and medical and automotive applications. You can increase capacity and reduce die costs. The future is with 6G wireless and satellite communication networks.
“We are very pleased to announce 6-inch indium phosphide wafer manufacturing capacity at both our Sherman and Järfella facilities. This is the result of our investment and operational experience in “manufacturing VCSEL arrays for mobile phones,” said Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa, Chief Strategy Officer and President of Materials. “Extensive vertical integration is a core strategy that we have relied on in several markets, ensuring that our optoelectronic products offer world-class quality, performance, time-to-market, and cost. We were able to win in the market with an advantage.”
“The move to 6-inch wafers has enabled us to continue to realize significant productivity gains, including producing four times as many devices per wafer, reducing die costs by more than 60% and increasing our fabs to higher capacity,” said Dr. Beck Mason, Executive Vice President of Telecommunications. “This capability will enable us to meet the growing demand for indium phosphide products in several core markets while strengthening our competitiveness and profitability.”
Coherent offers 200G electroabsorption modulated lasers (EMLs), 200G distributed feedback lasers and Mach-Zehnder modulators (DFB-MZ), 100G EMLs – high-speed photodetectors for silicon photonics applications, and high-power CW lasers. The company plans to shift the majority of its production to 3.5% over the next few years to take full advantage of the larger wafer sizes, higher yields, and improved performance needed to provide a sustainable competitive edge. We expect to move from inch InP to 6 inch InP. Demonstrate superiority in the communications and sensing market.
