Mobile phone companies plan to add about 600,000 5G base stations across China this year.
China is expected to complete the installation of a total of 2.9 million 5G base stations this year, local state news agency Xinhua News Agency The report cited Minister of Industry and Information Technology Jin Zhuang Long.

According to recent reports, Shanghai, China’s main financial hub, also plans to deploy 10,000 more 5G base stations this year.
With this planned expansion, the total number of 5G base stations in Shanghai will reach 77,000 by the end of 2023. Meanwhile, the fiber optic network will cover 2,000 office buildings and all newly built smart factories, the Shanghai Communications Bureau said.
Additionally, 5G data traffic is expected to account for more than 60% of Shanghai’s total communications traffic by 2023.
According to the local administration, by the end of 2023, 5G applications will cover more than 30% of Shanghai’s education, medical, cultural and tourism industries, and more than 35% of large industrial enterprises.
Meanwhile, as of the end of July 2022, there are a total of 63,000 5G base stations in China’s capital, Beijing.
Chinese carriers recorded a net addition of 16.53 million 5G subscribers in January, according to the carrier’s latest available statistics.
China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier in terms of number of subscribers, added a total of 8.46 million 5G subscribers in the first month of this year. The company announced that it ended last month with 622.47 million 5G subscribers. China Mobile added a total of 227.2 million subscribers in its 5G segment during 2022.
Meanwhile, China Telecom added 5 million 5G subscribers last month, bringing its total 5G subscriber base to 273 million. During 2022, the carrier added a total of 80.16 million 5G subscribers.
Rival carrier China Unicom said it added a total of 3.07 million 5G subscribers during the last month. The company’s 5G subscriber count at the end of January was 215.8 million. China Unicom added more than 42 million subscribers in its 5G segment during 2022.
