In its latest report, the GSMA predicts that the 5G market will contribute about $260 billion to China’s economy in 2030, and the association also said the country’s major carriers have signed the Open Gateway Initiative. The company announced that it has released its first commercial API since its launch.
In its Mobile Economy China 2024 report, the association predicted that more than half of China’s mobile connections will be 5G by the end of this year.
By 2030, this technology is expected to account for 88% of all connections in the country. At that point, its 1.6 billion connections are expected to account for one-third of the worldwide total.
As of the end of last year, the domestic 5G figure was 810 million and is expected to reach the 1 billion level by 2024. This is in line with predictions in the 2023 report, which predicted the milestone would be reached by 2025.
GSMA Director General Mats Granrid said in a statement: “This year, the number of 5G connections in China will exceed 1 billion, and we will continue to invest in and enable further evolutions such as 5G-Advanced, 5G New Calling, and 5G RedCap to improve user experience and unlock new capabilities. It becomes a source of revenue for telecommunications carriers, who expect high performance. ”
The previous report pegged the economic value of 5G in the country in 2030 at $290 billion, slightly higher than the latest estimate.
Moving the gateway
In a separate statement, also released on the sidelines of the “Post-MWC Sharing Event” in Beijing, the GSMA announced that China Unicom, China Mobile and China Telecom have commercially launched the Security API One-Time Password Application Programming Interface. .
This API is certified under the Open Gateway initiative and is designed to help developers secure mobile apps by delivering one-time passwords using SMS.
Granrid said the move “demonstrates the commitment of China’s leading carriers to protect China’s 1.28 billion mobile users from cybercrime.”
The universal API advancement by the country’s largest carrier comes as ICT players CITIC Telecom, Huawei and ZTE become the latest channel partners to sign up to support the Open Gateway initiative.
