China Mobile plans to expand 5G-A to more than 300 cities in the country by the end of the year, the Beijing-based company announced yesterday.
5G-A, also known as 5.5G, is an intermediate stage between 5G and 6G. It offers faster transmission speeds, lower latency, higher connection density, greater network capacity, and better network security than 5G.
China Mobile will also work with device manufacturers and chip suppliers to promote product technology upgrades, said Gao Tongqing, deputy general manager.
To promote the development of 5G-A industrial ecosystem, China Mobile has collaborated with industrial partners on 5G-A innovation and naked-eye 3D technology. The company has released mobile phones, tablets, car screens, notebooks and monitor products, and has several R&D achievements in content applications and technology platforms.
To promote the popularization of 5G-A devices, China Mobile plans to help its supply chain partners launch more than 20 5G-A device models and reach more than 20 million users by the end of this year.
At the 2024 Mobile World Congress held last month, Li Qiang, director of mobile planning and construction at China Mobile, said this year will be the first year of commercialization of 5G-A technology. The company will work with partners to build a 5G-A business model and strive to fully commercialize the technology by the end of 2026, he said.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China had about 3.4 million 5G base stations and 805 million 5G smartphone users as of the end of last year.
