Last year, Apple made a surprising move, announcing that iPhone 15 Pro models would support full-fledged AAA console titles and would partner with the likes of Capcom to bring current-gen games to the mobile platform. After lackluster commercial reviews, it seems Capcom is trying to make the iOS ports even less appealing, with all “Resident Evil” games now requiring an internet connection to play.
Trending on TwitterCapcom announced updates for its iOS Resident Evil games, saying: “Attention iPhone/iPad/Mac players, new patches are available for Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, and Resident Evil Village. Please update your games via the App Store.”
While patches are generally considered a good thing, in this case it might be best to hold off on the update. Reading the patch notes The main addition in this update is the addition of DRM, which means that Resident Evil 7, RE4, and Village now require an internet connection to run. state:
“Due to changes to the launch process, this app now requires an internet connection to launch.”
It’s not the first mobile game to require such a connection, but every Capcom game released on iOS to date has been single-player, so requiring an internet connection at launch makes little sense unless the publisher is doing so to gather additional data.
As we’ve said before, AAA games ported to the iPhone so far haven’t been the best in terms of sales, especially the Resident Evil games. Less than 100,000 copies in total so far – Best case scenario.
So Capcom may be doing whatever it takes to recoup its costs, even if that means analyzing game data. It will be interesting to see how fans react to this change.
