Caltech technology leaders plan to complete a project this month to fully transition the university’s wireless infrastructure to 5G.
According to Mustang News, Cal Poly’s current Wi-Fi network is reaching its limits. Chief Information Officer Bill Britton told the newspaper that his office will be testing the new 5G network this month at the University of Central California’s Digital Transformation Hub, a lab for testing new technologies. The company said it has begun rolling out the technology and expects broader deployment later this month.
“What we’re trying to do in this lab and really look at how we can add to our bandwidth efforts on campus for deployment,” Britton said.・Told the news.
The project is primarily supported by Amazon Web Services and Virginia telecommunications company Federated Wireless, which is advising the project at the hub.
In addition to increased bandwidth, Britton said the new network will be more efficient by using one 5G access point per building instead of the four access points in the current 4G configuration.
Staff are also using the hub to test a “digital twin” – a virtual copy of the campus. This allows university administrators and faculty to book classrooms and check the signal strength of each 5G access point across campus.
