Outdoor smart plugs are a great addition to any homeowner who uses wired devices in their backyard, such as patio lights, bug repellents, outdoor speakers, or electric grills.
A smart plug is essentially a normal power socket, but using an app or digital platform you can see and control remotely what devices are connected to it, whether the plug is still enabled or whether to switch it off completely.
Especially in today’s smart homes, it’s a super convenient way to keep track of your various devices and make sure you don’t forget to turn off items that shouldn’t be running at night, not to mention the benefits of a smart ecosystem that allows you to set custom schedules, turn on certain appliances at the same time, and even activate or control devices using voice commands.
However, these outdoor smart plugs are weather-resistant and designed to handle rainy days without any issues, and they offer the added benefit of allowing you to power your outdoor appliances on and off without having to leave the comfort of your home.
So whether you use Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri to control your smart home, an outdoor smart plug is the way to go.
Things to consider
There are a few decisions you need to make when buying an outdoor smart plug. Which voice assistant will you use? How many outlets do you need? Some models have just one outlet, while others have two. Answering these questions will help you choose the best plug for your environment.

TP-Link’s Kasa app is easy to use, and setting up your Kasa device is a breeze. The Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug has two independently controlled outlets and is rated to operate in temperatures from -4 degrees to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. You can choose from voice commands, schedules, timers, scenes, sunrise/sunset modes, and an away from home feature that randomly powers the outlets on and off.
Kasa products work with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, so you can ask your voice assistant of choice to turn on your lights. At under $30, it’s an affordable smart plug for your outdoor spaces. Read our review of the TP-Link Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug.

If you’re looking for a single-outlet option, Braumm’s model works with Google Assistant and Alexa to control a single device. The $20 list price is a bit steep considering there’s only one outlet to control, but it’s weather-resistant and can withstand temperatures from -4 degrees to 113 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a good choice if you only need one outdoor outlet.
In addition to status, timers, schedules and scenes, the app also provides weather information, a useful feature for an outdoor device. You can also share control with other users by downloading the Braumm app on their mobile devices.

This $18 device from Wyze is the most affordable outdoor smart plug out there, but it does offer some promising features, especially for the price.
Wyze Plug Outdoor has two independently controlled 15 amp outlets. It’s IP64 rated for protection against water and dust in temperatures ranging from -4 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Plug Outdoor can be controlled with physical buttons, voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, or the Wyze app.
You can also set the plug to perform a variety of automations, including dusk-to-dawn sensing, vacation mode, custom schedules, and triggers based on other devices. Unlike most smart plugs, the Wyze Plug Outdoor includes energy monitoring capabilities: you’ll receive alerts when your energy thresholds are exceeded and you can view your consumption history in the app.

WeMo’s Smart Outdoor Plug is a HomeKit-enabled option that offers two outlets and voice control with Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant. At around $40, it’s not the cheapest model you can buy, but WeMo’s app works well and the brand has produced some great plugs and outlets over the years.
This plug might not be ideal for colder climates, as it’s rated for temperatures between 32 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit. There are two sockets, but unlike the TP-Link model, they can’t be scheduled or controlled separately. Depending on your usage, this could be a killer.

Frequently asked questions about the best outdoor smart plugs
See what the experts have to say
A smart plug is an adapter that controls the power delivery to connected devices. It doesn’t make any changes to your existing outlets. A smart plug simply disconnects or reconnects devices to power when it receives a signal (via an app or voice command).

This is not a good idea. Outdoor models are optimized for extreme temperatures and have IP-rated housings that protect against elements like rain and dust. It’s much safer to use plugs that are made specifically for outdoor use.

Most smart plugs work with limited functionality over a Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Bluetooth connection, but you’ll need a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection to take advantage of features like voice commands with the Google Assistant, Siri, or Alexa, or to control your plug when you’re not nearby.
