PResident Joe Biden’s decision to study how to make government-owned spectrum frequencies more available to the private sector could help the US accelerate 5G expansion and catch up with China. Biden announced a “national spectrum strategy” on Monday that specifies how many frequencies the federal government believes private companies can use to expand business related to everything from voice calls to mobile apps. We called for detailed research on these frequencies. Spectrum is an important part of how many technology companies operate. Although most people may not be aware that electromagnetic waves exist around us, industry groups believe they are…
The West Midlands Integration Authority (WMCA) today (Thursday 16 November) announced new plans to accelerate the rollout of 5G technology across the region’s advanced manufacturing sector, helping to improve productivity and create better-paying jobs. It received funding of £4 million. The funding was won through a joint bid by WM5G (West Midlands 5G), JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) and WMCA’s local authority partners to the government’s 5G Innovation Regional Competition, which aims to improve people’s health outcomes through driving. It is also used to improve Smart community concept including social housing and care. Advanced manufacturing and smart communities are two key…
This article is part of our exclusive IEEE Journal Watch series in partnership with IEEE Xplore. As the telecommunications industry slowly rolls out 5G networks around the world, researchers are starting to look at technologies for the next generation, 6G networks. One vision for 6G is to use new cellular frequencies that range from 100 gigahertz to terahertz. The problem with this vision is that gases in the atmosphere absorb these radio waves, so signals transmitted at these frequencies can become useless after just a few meters. But what if we could turn that disadvantage around and use it to address a…
If you require high-speed data transfer, building a private 5G network for your business can be beneficial. But 5G is more expensive than 4G and WiFi, so it might not be worth it for every business. 5G is designed to be more secure than 4G and WiFi, which could be useful for businesses that need security. This article is part of “5G Playbook,” a series exploring one of the most significant technological innovations of our time. Thank you for subscribing! The benefits and capabilities offered by the deployment of private wireless networks were quickly realized. Employees now have quick access to mission-critical business applications on his 3,000 mobile devices, and real-time collaboration between teams from anywhere in the factory is possible via Microsoft Teams. Workers can refer to online manuals in the field to resolve repairs or fill out work orders online in SAP for quick evaluation. On the factory floor, operational technology and manufacturing assets are integrated to connect, monitor, and manage machines. In the future, Kyndryl plans to work with CPChem to expand its private wireless deployment globally,…
