Here’s what’s trending in NASCAR this week: Austin DillonWinning the Cook Out 400 in Richmond.
Dillon beat them both. Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin He took the checkered flag in highly controversial circumstances on the final corner of the race, and NASCAR penalized him 25 Cup Series points and stripped him of win-based playoff eligibility, citing his driving as detrimental to the sport.
Richard Childress Racing will appeal the rulingDillon can’t wait to see the results based on the SMT data he has seen.
“I’m not going to talk about what happened in Turns 3 and 4 right now because I have to go through the appeals process,” Austin Dillon said. Marty and Maggie “On ESPN, NASCAR is obviously taking everything into consideration. The best thing for us to do is say, ‘Look, our car was the best and we had a three-second lead with two laps to go,’ and then wait until the appeal is over to give my side of the story, or that driver who was driving the race car.”
That being said, Austin Dillon has an interesting idea about NASCAR’s appeals process.
He hopes it will become a formality and provide a bit of a spectacle, and few would argue that, at least in this case, it won’t generate a lot of interest.
“I think it would be interesting to one day have the appeals process featured on the show,” Dillon said, “almost like we go to court and present our case, so we would literally get advice from NASCAR on how to present things. I actually think Denny does a very good job of explaining the whole appeals process on one of his podcasts.”
“We have to go all out and show that I have no regrets about winning the race last weekend and I owe that to the precedent set by everyone who’s been there before me in NASCAR.”
Austin Dillon’s chances of making the playoffs will be tough unless he wins his penalty appeal. He’s currently 31st in points and will almost certainly be too far behind to make up the gap unless he wins the final three races of the regular season.
Needless to say, the outcome of the appeal process is extremely important to him.
“So I’m excited to see how this process works out, but at the end of the day, whether it goes the right way or the wrong way, I’m proud of the win we brought home in Richmond and we’re going to do everything we can over the next three weeks to try to get another win and get into the playoffs,” Dillon said.
