AT&T announces leaked dataset affects approximately 73 million current and former account holders
Expanding(Reuters) – Telecommunications company AT&T said on Saturday that a data set published on the “dark web” about two weeks ago covers about 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million people, based on a preliminary analysis of its case. It was announced that the former account holders were affected.
The company said in a statement that the dataset appears to be from before 2019. The company said there is no evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting from this incident.
The company said it is not yet clear whether the data originated from AT&T or one of its vendors.
AT&T said the incident did not have a material impact on its operations and that the source of the data was still being investigated.
AT&T said it is in contact with those affected and will provide credit monitoring where applicable.
TechCrunch reported on Saturday that AT&T is resetting passcodes on customer accounts following the breach.
AT&T did not respond to Reuters’ request for further comment.
The wireless carrier’s 5G network covers approximately 290 million people across the United States.
AT&T suffered an outage in February that disrupted calls and text messages for thousands of U.S. users and sparked a federal investigation.
