More than 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, and the Jonas Brothers, have filed a lawsuit against technology companies, artificial intelligence (AI) developers, and digital music services over concerns about the impact on artists and songwriters. They are calling for the end of the use of AI. In an open letter published Tuesday.
In a letter sponsored by the Artist Rights Alliance, an artist-led nonprofit education and advocacy organization, the artists said that unregulated use of AI in the music industry “thwarts creativity and harms artists, songwriters, and musicians.” It warned that this could harm rights holders. .
“Make no mistake about it, I believe that when used responsibly, AI has enormous potential to enhance human creativity and enable the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans around the world.” We believe,” the letter states.
He added that “unfortunately, some platforms and developers” are using AI in ways that can negatively impact artists.
“When used irresponsibly, AI poses significant threats to our ability to protect our privacy, identities, music, and lives,” the letter added.
The paper claims that “some of the biggest and most powerful companies” are using artists’ work without their permission to train AI models or create AI-generated sounds, resulting in “copyright payments” being paid to artists. It criticized the move as “drastically diluting the royalty pool.”
This letter calls on AI developers, technology companies, and digital music services to use AI music generation technologies, content, and tools that undermine or replace the work of human artists and songwriters, or deny them fair compensation. We are asking you to pledge not to develop or introduce any.
Other artists who signed the letter include Katy Perry, Zayn Malik, Noah Kahan, Imagine Dragons, and the estates of Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra.
Concerns about how AI will impact artists have amplified over the past year, as AI tools have rapidly grown in popularity and sophistication.
In Hollywood, the SAG-AFTRA union, which represents actors, and the Writers Guild of America, which represents writers, fought in contract negotiations last year and won protection for their unions from AI.
