The Indian Army has established an advanced force known as Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG).
This unit is tasked with researching and evaluating cutting-edge communications technologies.
Areas of focus include artificial intelligence and machine learning, 5G, 6G, and quantum technologies for military applications.
Officials acknowledged that the establishment of STEAG is consistent with the Army’s efforts to develop technology suitable for future warfare.
STEAG’s mission to foster and develop future technology
STEAG is designed to be a “nursery school for the cultivation and development of customized technology across the full range of wired and wireless systems,” military officials said.
This includes electronic switching, mobile communications, software defined radio (SDR), electronic warfare (EW) systems, and more.
The force aims to foster collaboration with academia and industry, leverage niche technologies, harness innovative solutions and identify suitable use cases for defense applications, the military said.
The role of promoting independence in advanced communication
According to military officials, STEAG aims to bridge the gap between the military, industry and academia based on the following principles: atmanirbharat and Startup India’s initiatives.
This unit is expected to revolutionize self-sufficiency in advanced communication technology.
These have traditionally been dominated by a small number of developed countries and research ecosystems.
Army officials said the new “center of excellence” will significantly enhance India’s military communications technology capabilities.
The importance of communication technology in modern warfare
The Army believes that communication will become a critical element of military operations.

An official said the high-tech division will carry out technology research, evaluation and development of core information and communication technology (ICT) solutions.
