WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Are you paying a high monthly fee for internet service but still experiencing frustratingly slow speeds? Don’t settle for substandard streaming or choppy gaming. If your internet isn’t delivering the speeds you expect, it’s time to fix the problem.
Through TV commercials, we are led to believe that everyone needs the fastest internet service in their home. A 1 Gig internet package can cost over $100 per month. In reality, not everyone needs 1Gb speeds. If you just want to stream Netflix or Prime on one TV, a 300Mb package will suffice. To reach speeds above 300Mb, a large number of devices would need to use the same internet connection.
If you frequently see buffering animations on your screen, there are a few things you should check before shelling out another $20-50 for faster speeds.
Check your Internet connection
First, measure your internet speed by visiting speedtest.org or speedtest.net. First, test a computer connected directly to your internet gateway via an ethernet cable. An ethernet connection is a lot like the old telephone connection that connects a landline, but it’s a bit larger. Your internet installer may have connected the cable to your computer. If not, you can easily connect it by plugging an ethernet cable into one of the ports on your internet gateway. The results should closely match the speed you’re paying for. Next, test your speed with a mobile device connected to your Wi-Fi network. Expect slightly slower speeds here. If you experience buffering on your TV, check the speed in that room as well.
Upgrade your router
If your device speeds are significantly slower than your plan says, your router may be the culprit. If your router is old (10 years old or older), it’s time to invest in a Wi-Fi 6 router. Place your router in the center of your home and align the antennas for optimal coverage.
Optimize your connection
If your Wi-Fi connection is still slow, try connecting your device directly to your router with an Ethernet cable. If this isn’t possible for your device, consider using a Wi-Fi extender to boost your signal. Place the extender halfway between your router and the slow device. The WiFi signal will reach the extender, which will repeat the stronger signal.
Consider a mesh system
For larger homes or areas with Wi-Fi dead zones, a mesh system is an exciting solution. This system distributes multiple transmitters throughout your home to ensure consistent coverage. Connect your device to the closest transmitter for best performance. When you connect, it will always connect to the nearest mesh transmitter.
