American Airlines is enhancing Wi-Fi connectivity for members of its AAdvantage loyalty program, introducing the option to use miles to pay for in-flight Wi-Fi.
The airline announced it will introduce an option to redeem miles for in-flight Wi-Fi “on select aircraft in the coming weeks.” It is expected to be available on all of the company’s Viasat-powered narrowbody aircraft by the summer travel season. Please note that American Airlines does not provide free access to Wi-Fi, and fees start from 10 USD, depending on the route.
The company said the Wi-Fi enhancements are enabled by a newly designed in-flight portal with a sleek design with a more “user-friendly” purchase process, “reduced clicks” and “strategic “Pop-up messaging” is promised. According to the carrier, the portal will be easier to navigate, highlighting Wi-Fi, entertainment and partner offers on one page.
American Airlines already has a free, advertised Wi-Fi option on its domestic Viasat narrowbody planes, and the airline plans to begin installing high-speed Wi-Fi on about 500 dual-class regional planes this summer.
Earlier this year, American Airlines outlined a number of new upcoming updates to its AAdvantage loyalty program, including the option to claim bonus loyalty points when you reach a selected loyalty point reward level. Learn more:
American Airlines Announces Updates to AAdvantage Program
Last year, American Airlines became the first airline to allow streaming across its mainline fleet, highlighting that it updates about 200 titles each month based on “current entertainment trends, customer feedback and data analysis.” Examples include his “Awards Nominations” channel, which features some of his 2024 winners and nominations from the recent awards circuit.
The company has also partnered with Apple TV+, offering customers a free two-month subscription to continue watching Apple Originals that they started onboard.
