A promotional battle for a movie about the history of Coke vs. Pepsi broke out, and the Internet was completely divided.
Hollywood is entering an era of consumerism. Brands are telling their stories on the big screen, with movies like Barbie and Super Mario Bros. making the list of the highest-grossing films ever made. No wonder they line up around the block for it.
Just last year, Affleck and Damon released Air, a collaboration that tells the story of Nike’s battle to sponsor Michael Jordan during the escalating athletic shoe wars. Now, two well-known soda companies, Coke and Pepsi, are entering the fray.

Both brands have been competing for decades, with Coke consistently defeating its blue and red opponents. The much-talked-about new film pitch, for which Sony has reportedly offered a seven-figure bid, will tell the story of the 1980s “cola wars.” Needless to say, movie fans are quite divided on this point.
A Coke vs. Pepsi movie is in the works
According to Deadline , Sony bid approximately $1.5 million for a Coke vs. Pepsi pitch titled “Cola Wars,” which focused on Pepsi’s mission to dethrone Coke from the top spot in the world.

“From Michael Jackson’s tragic accident to the New Coke debacle, this behind-the-scenes account tells the ultimate underdog story of the most iconic No. 2 contender in history competing for the No. 1 spot. ” states the report.
In a sense, the industry has always laid the foundation for movies about the competition between Coke and Pepsi. Two soda companies have been in the spotlight ever since product placement became a concept. With films like Wayne’s World, World War Z, and (most recently) Madame Web, Pepsi has fought for its on-screen presence.

But Coke might beat them on that front too. ET, Blade Runner, and Stranger Things all feature this iconic drink. In fact, New Coke’s influence on Stranger Things was so effective that the company even brought back the famous drink after it was discontinued.
Jason Schuman and Ben Queen wrote the screenplay for Cola Wars, and Sony executive Maia Eyre will direct.

Cola wars divide the internet
Upon hearing the Cola Wars hype, movie buffs immediately took to social media to express very different views.

Some were quick to express their disappointment, claiming that another movie based on a famous brand lacks imagination.
“Is this really worth a movie??” 1 X user while asking, another “There are so many movies about brands. Brands are our real heroes. We all love brands and want to be friends with them.”
“Enough!!! Corporate movies!!! I’m not interested in brands, I’m interested in human stories.” I wrote the third one.
Elsewhere, other comments seemed less focused on the negative. Instead, they joked about what the movie would ultimately be like and even made some Marvel jokes.

Of course, most of all, there was a lot of Coke vs. Pepsi debate. …It looks like the cola war is still going on.
