During Apple’s quarterly earnings call Thursday afternoon, CEO Tim Cook said the company is working on generative AI software features that it plans to bring to customers “later this year.”It is consistent with reports from bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently said that iOS 18 could be the “biggest” update in operating system history. Cook’s tease — he mentioned generative AI several times, but never specifically — seems to confirm that a big release is planned for this fall.
“As we look to the future, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future, including artificial intelligence, where we continue to invest significant time and effort. We look forward to sharing details of our ongoing research in this area later this year,” Cook said in prepared remarks.
Analysts tried to press Mr. Cook for more details, but he did not provide much. “Our MO is to always work and after that Let’s not talk about work and try not to get in front of ourselves. So we’re going to keep this as well. But there are some things we’re incredibly excited about that we’ll be talking about later this year. ”
From advanced photo manipulation to enhanced word processing capabilities, AI software features have become a key selling point for smartphones made by Google and Samsung in recent months. It’s rare for Apple to telegraph future moves, so this could be a sign that the company has ambitious plans to integrate AI into its software platforms (iOS, iPadOS, macOS) later this year. You can capture it.
“Without going into too much detail, I just want to say that I think there’s a huge opportunity in generative AI and AI,” Cook concluded the call.
