Binance said the leaked passwords and site code, which were visible on GitHub for several months before being removed last week, could cause “significant financial harm,” 404 Media reported.
The exchange, whose U.S. arm was recently taken away from Alaska and Florida, sued GitHub and was successful in removing the leaked data last week. Binance said in its takedown request that the upload was not authorized and that the data posed a “significant risk to Binance,” could cause “significant economic harm,” and was not intended to disrupt or harm users. The media claims that the leaked data included:
- Code related to Binance’s password and multi-factor authentication implementation.
- A diagram detailing how Binance dependencies work.
- According to 404, the expected password for a system labeled “prod” may be related to a live site.

The leak was shared by an account called Termf and was available for viewing for several months. When 404 Media asked Binance on January 5, a spokesperson said, “We are aware that there are individuals online who claim to have confidential Binance information.”
A spokesperson said the company’s security team evaluated the data and found it “does not resemble what is currently in production.” They added:Users can rest assured that their data and assets will remain safe on our platform.”
404 Media noted that there is no evidence to suggest that the data was accessed or used by malicious parties. It is unclear whether the data was leaked by mistake or by a Binance employee or someone outside the company.
