Finland’s 5G speeds were the slowest in the Nordic countries
Finland ranks last among the Nordic countries in terms of average 5G upload and download speeds. Norway had the fastest average 5G upload speeds in 2023 at around 39 Mbps, while Finland reached nearly 27 Mbps. Additionally, her slowest average 5G download speed that year was in Finland, at around 225 Mbps.
In general, 5G coverage in Finland has increased since 2020. The coverage of urban households increased from 12.4 percent in 2020 to almost 95 percent in 2023, while the 5G coverage of rural households reached nearly 78 percent in the same year. Coverage was highest in Uusimaa, the capital region that includes Finland’s capital Helsinki, at 51% in 2023. Regional 5G coverage became less the further north the region was located. Lapland and Kainu ranked last in coverage in the same year with 2% each.
Finnish 5G provider
Finland’s three major carriers, Elisa, Telia and DNA, are all offering 5G connectivity to their customers. Elisa has dominated the Finnish mobile subscription market over the past decade. Telia Finland’s share remained around 31% during the observation period, while DNA, the third largest operator, increased its share by 5%. All three companies began rolling out 5G for their customers in 2019 and 2020. At the time, 5G was only available in certain, primarily urban areas. Stable 5G coverage nationwide is still a topic that companies are grappling with.
Nokia is one of the leaders in the 5G patent market
After the carrier, Finnish communications and information technology company Nokia is also investing in the technology. The company, previously known for its mobile phones and smartphones, has shifted its focus to data networking services and communications equipment businesses. Nokia is one of the leading 5G patent holders, with over 6,000 patent families declared essential to 5G. As of 2022, Nokia’s mobile network is Nokia’s most profitable business segment. Nokia and Telia Finland launched the world’s first commercial 5G standalone (SA) network in the same year, enabling Telia Finland to offer users a better and more stable 5G connection.
