SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, has begun operations in Ghana, furthering the country’s digital connectivity ambitions. Starlink Director of Global Licensing and Market Activation, Rebecca Slick Hunter, announced that Ghana has joined the list of African countries that will benefit from Starlink’s advanced satellite broadband services.
Licensing and Regulatory Framework
Four months ago, Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) approved SpaceX’s Starlink GH LTD license, authorizing Starlink Satellite Broadband to operate in the country. This approval follows the approval of the satellite licensing framework by the Ghana Ministry of Communications and Digitalization.
Expanding digital connectivity in Ghana
With Starlink now operational, Ghana joins Botswana and other African countries benefiting from the fast, reliable internet provided by Starlink’s LEO satellites, along with Benin, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Madagascar, Eswatini, Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Zambia (and a growing list).
The launch of Starlink in Ghana marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts towards strengthening its digital economy. Starlink is expected to bridge the digital divide and enhance digital inclusion; as well as connect more Ghanaians to the global digital landscape by providing advanced internet solutions. Furthermore, the development underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering a strong digital infrastructure in support of socio-economic growth and innovation.
