Seattle-Tacoma International Airport experienced disruptions to its internet, phone, email and other systems for the third day on Monday (August 26) due to a suspected cyberattack. The Port of Seattle Authority is actively investigating the outage and working to restore full service.
According to media reports, airport managing director Lance Little said at a press conference on Sunday that officials were working to bring essential systems back online and mitigate the impact to passengers.
He said the investigation was being conducted with the help of outside experts and federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection.
Power outage affects air travel
Airlines including Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines reported no service interruptions due to the outage, and both airlines use Seattle International Airport as their base. The outage affected the Port of Seattle’s baggage sorting system, and airlines warned passengers not to check their bags to avoid delays.
Airports advised travelers to allow extra time at the airport and to use airline mobile apps to retrieve their boarding passes and baggage tags. Despite these measures, many travelers faced long security lines and long wait times at baggage counters. Screens in the terminal were also not visible, making it difficult for passengers to find their gates.
