Optus has a new affordable 5G smartphone with a large camera, the Nubia Focus 5G, in stores.
Made by ZTE, the makers of Telstra’s latest 5G handset, the Nubia Focus has an impressive rear camera that spans almost the entire width of the phone. Dubbed the “NeoVision” camera, it uses a whopping 108MP sensor. While megapixels are just one measure of camera quality, it does mean you can zoom in and crop your photos without too much distortion.
On the front, it’s fitted with a 6.6-inch 120Hz display. It’s smooth, but the trade-off is a 720p resolution (1612 x 720 to be exact). It’s similar in many ways to its Telstra counterpart, with a 5,000mAh battery capacity, 4GB of physical RAM, and NFC wireless technology.
The Nubia Focus 5G is priced a little higher than Telstra’s offering, but stands out for its higher virtual memory capacity: While the Telstra T-Elite 5G supports a total of 8GB of RAM via unused storage, the Nubia supports up to 14GB, making it a bit faster, and it also has 256GB of storage, double the Telstra phone’s.
Running on an adapted version of Android 14, the Nubia also has a feature similar to recent iPhones, such as Live Island Interactive, which lets you easily see notifications and timers through a small cutout around the front camera.
Nubia Focus 5G release date and price
Available exclusively from Optus, the new phone costs $248.40 upfront, or if you’d prefer to pay in instalments alongside your phone bill, there are 12, 24 or 36-month plans available, which works out to just $1 a month.
As an introductory offer, anyone who purchases the phone will also receive a set of BlueAnt Pump Air Lite2 earphones worth $90.
That’s $70 more than the Telstra T-Elite, but the extra cost gets you slightly more power, storage and a bigger camera that’s hard to miss.
We have been testing both phones and will be publishing a full review and comparison soon.
