Fiber internet is constantly improving, with speeds getting faster and faster. Currently, Frontier users can enjoy up to 7 gigabits of service.
Frontier Communications is expanding its fiber optic internet service with a new 7 Gigabit plan that promises to be one of the fastest options widely available on the market. For $309.99 per month, the plan offers 7Gbps symmetrical upload and download speeds, unlimited data, and a Wi-Fi 7 router. The plan is available in most of the 25 states served by Frontier, including key markets like California, Texas, and Florida.
The move puts Frontier, which previously only offered 2G and 5G options, at the forefront of the national high-speed internet race, though it also comes at a higher price than some of its competitors: Google Fiber offers an 8Gbps plan for $150 per month, but it’s only available in a few cities; Optimum also offers an 8G plan for $300 per month, but it’s only available in the New York tri-state area.
The push for faster internet is evident across the industry, with AT&T expanding its 5 gigabit plans in California and Comcast expanding its gigabit speed fiber optic footprint and introducing 2 gigabit cable internet. And no one is stopping anytime soon. Google Fiber recently began testing a super-fast 50 gigabit connection that won’t be rolling out to customers anytime soon, but could become a reality sooner or later. Other companies no doubt have their own plans, but not all of them are public.
Most of us are happy with sub-gigabit or 1 gigabit internet, but it’s clear that the upper limit is very high, much higher than what we’re used to today. Let’s hope that the super-fast future won’t be so expensive.
