Samsung Galaxy M35 5G review: A mid-range contender

When I first laid eyes on the Samsung Galaxy M35 5G, I couldn’t help but be impressed with its sleek and modern design. This isn’t just another smartphone in the Galaxy lineup, it seems like a carefully crafted product aimed at delivering a solid user experience without breaking the budget. After using it for a few weeks, I have a pretty clear idea of what this phone has to offer and where it fits in the crowded market of budget smartphones.

But before we get into the details, let’s have a look at its specifications.

screen 6.60 inch touchscreen display
battery 6000mAh
Storage 6GB RAM|128GB ROM, 8GB RAM|128GB/256 ROM
Processor Samsung Exynos 1380
Rear camera 50MP + 8MP + 2MP
Front camera 13MP
operating system Android 14, OneUI 6.1
color Dark blue, light blue, gray
price 6GB will cost Rs 19,999, 8GB/128GB will cost Rs 21,499, and 8GB/256GB will cost Rs 24,499.

Let’s take a closer look at its features:

Design and Quality

The first thing we noticed while reviewing the M35 5G is its slim body and very balanced weight distribution. Samsung has used high-quality polycarbonate for the back panel, which gives it a glossy finish. The phone feels solid in the hand, but its thickness and weight might not appeal to everyone looking for a smartphone in this budget segment.

The fingerprint sensor placement on the right side is well designed and easy to use. It’s responsive and unlocks almost instantly. Above the fingerprint sensor, there’s also an easy-to-reach volume rocker. At the bottom of the phone, you’ll find a USB Type-C port, a single speaker grille, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is a pleasant surprise in 2024. The speaker is adequate for everyday use, but you can’t rely on it for a better music experience.

screen

The Samsung Galaxy M35 has a large display with thick bezels. Thanks to AMOLED technology, the colors on the display are vibrant. The display is easy to read even in direct sunlight, and the 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling through social media a breeze.

The only thing I don’t really like is the punch-hole camera notch at the top center of the display – it’s not too intrusive but I prefer no notch – but considering the price point, this is something I can ignore.

Samsung has upgraded the display protection on the Galaxy M35 5G with Gorilla Glass Victus+, and the display comes in two colour options – Vivid and Natural.

performance

We did not experience any major slowdowns or lags while using the Samsung Galaxy M35 5G. We received the 8GB+128GB model and had no issues multitasking. Moreover, switching between apps is smooth and the phone is quick to handle everyday tasks like internet browsing, social media, video streaming, and more.

Another feature that caught my attention is the inclusion of a vapor cooling chamber, something not seen in this budget segment – the phone did not heat up while playing games like Clash of Clans and BGMI.

software

For those who prefer a clean user interface, One UI is a better option. The Galaxy M35 5G comes with One UI. The UI is user-friendly and has several features such as split-screen multitasking, secure folder, dedicated gaming mode, etc. It has several of Samsung’s suite of apps including Samsung Health, SmartThings, Smart Switch, TV, etc., making it a great choice for users who are already using the Samsung ecosystem.

However, there are quite a few pre-installed apps that you might not want, but you can remove them, and Samsung has also built ads into some of the UI, but thankfully these can be turned off to some extent.

Camera performance

When it comes to the camera setup, the Galaxy M35 is versatile. The triple camera system with a 64MP primary sensor, 12MP ultra-wide-angle, and 5MP depth sensor captures detailed images with vivid colors in good lighting conditions. The phone comes with AI Scene Optimizer, Pro Mode, Pro Video, Night, Macro, Panorama, Food, Super Slow-Mo, Slow-Mo, Hyperlapse, and Single Take.

The ultra-wide lens is useful for capturing landscapes and group shots, but it noticeably reduces detail compared to the main camera. In low-light conditions, using Night mode improves image quality, but there is still a fair amount of noise. The depth sensor helps take portraits with good bokeh effects, but edge detection could be more accurate.

The front camera is great for selfies, delivering crisp, sharp images. Portrait mode also works well here, with a natural background blur. Video recording is stable, supporting up to 4K at 30fps. The stabilization works well enough for casual videography, but don’t expect gimbal-level smoothness.

Battery life

The battery on the Galaxy M35 5G is more than enough to last a day of moderate to heavy usage. With a mix of social media browsing, gaming, video streaming, and photography, I always had around 20-25% battery left at the end of the day. The phone supports 25W fast charging, which isn’t the fastest but is adequate. It took around 90 minutes to charge from 0 to 100%, which is a reasonable time.

verdict

In summary, the Samsung Galaxy M35 5G is an all-around great value for money device. For me, the design, display quality and performance make it worth trying at this price point.

However, the camera performance is good enough for everyday use. The only issues I have are the bloatware, occasional UI ads, and poor camera performance in low light. But, if you are looking for a smartphone under Rs 20,000, the Galaxy M35 5G proves to be your best option.
