NEW DELHI: Indian telecom companies aim to achieve 10 per cent global share of sixth generation (6G) patents in the next three years, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Telecommunications on Saturday.
“The SAC (Stakeholder Advisory Committee) members emphasised on systematically aligning research to ‘Indian needs’ and have put in place a vibrant standards community,” the ministry said in a statement.
India has already taken various initiatives such as the Bharat 6G vision document, launch of Bharat 6G Alliance, patent and IPR support framework and operationalisation of testbeds, “India can aim to achieve 10% of total 6G patents that further Indian needs and one-sixth contribution to global standards. SAC has proposed a three-year roadmap to achieve it,” the ministry said.
The proposal was taken up at the second meeting of the Advisory Committee on Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) chaired by Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday.
The advisory committee said widespread penetration of wired and intelligent wireless broadband networks with reliable connectivity is essential for India to become a leader in the deep technology (deep tech) sector.
“The TSP called for a supportive policy framework to encourage investment towards 100 per cent broadband penetration in the country. Various reasons and possible measures to improve the quality of communication services were also discussed,” the statement said.
Scindia asked the SAC members to define the key pathways for achieving the objectives discussed and the role to be played by various stakeholders, including the government, in achieving the said goals.
“He also urged the TSPs to take all necessary steps to ensure that the people receive quality telecommunication services,” the ministry said in a statement.
The meeting was attended by Pankaj Pawar, Managing Director, Reliance Jio, Akshaya Moondra, CEO, Vodafone Idea, Robert J Ravi, Managing Director, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), NG Subramaniam, Chairman, Tejas Networks and SP Kochhar, Secretary General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
