Philadelphia—Comcast has launched a WiFi Boost feature that allows Xfinity Mobile and Comcast Business Mobile devices to achieve speeds of up to 1 Gbps when connecting to millions of new “Xfinity Mobile” hotspots.
In announcing the feature, Comcast reported that approximately 90 percent of mobile data traffic on Xfinity Mobile devices is transmitted over WiFi rather than cellular. With more than 23 million WiFi hotspots now able to offer customers increased speeds through WiFi Boost, the company said Xfinity Mobile continues to provide a better experience that supports data-intensive applications over traditional cellular networks.
The upgrade comes at a time when Comcast and other cable operators are facing increasing competition from telecommunications companies offering 5G services. At the same time, cable operators like Comcast have emerged as one of the fastest-growing mobile providers in the country with their Xfinity Mobile and Comcast Business Mobile services, which have combined to add more than 6.5 million lines since their launches in 2017.
Amid increasing competition, Comcast announced that it has invested more than $20 billion over the past five years to upgrade and expand its Xfinity network and introduce innovative new features, such as WiFi Boost, to keep up with the constantly growing number of connected devices consumers use both inside and outside the home.
“By supercharging our hotspots, we’re unlocking the full potential of our customers’ mobile devices, giving them the boost they need when they need it, whether they’re downloading large files, live streaming a sporting event or making an important video call,” said Kohposh Kuda, senior vice president, Xfinity Mobile, Comcast. “One billion devices connect to Wi-Fi through our network because it delivers a great experience. We’re investing billions of dollars in our network to keep up with massive increases in data consumption, and the WiFi Boost upgrade is a huge benefit to mobile users.”
According to Comcast, WiFi Boost is made possible by Comcast’s fiber-optic based network, which is built to deliver a better internet experience anywhere to the more than 60 million homes and businesses and more than 23 million WiFi hotspots within Comcast’s service area.
