NEW DELHI: The share of 5G smartphones is set to grow exponentially over the next few years, registering further double-digit growth (over 13.2 percent) by 2025, a new report has said.
According to an IDC report, 5G smartphones are expected to grow 16% in 2024 and continue that trend next year, with global 5G market share expected to rise to 74.4% from 67.2% this year.
5G-enabled smartphones will continue to drive the market as adoption continues to grow across all regions and markets, with growth expected to reach approximately 16% in 2024.
With 5G saturation in most developed markets, growth in emerging markets will play a key role in driving shipments, said Anthony Scarcella, research director at IDC.
The overall smartphone market will see a compound annual growth rate of 2.3% from 2024 to 2028, but 5G shipments will achieve a growth rate of 9.1% over the same period, he added.
Meanwhile, global smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.21 billion units in 2024, up 4% from the previous year.
The market recovery is expected to continue in 2025, growing by 2.3%.
Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, said Android’s rapid growth comes after two tough years, while iOS growth is slowing due to a strong 2023 outlook and increased competition in China hurting its growth potential.
Popal said a strong AI move by the iPhone maker could help boost growth, especially in China, and revive demand for the device.
