Chinese academic researchers and telecom operators are working hard to gain a foothold in 6G, the next-generation wireless technology that has already become a key battlefield for innovation and industrial transformation.
Despite growing geopolitical interference in the global telecom industry, China has built a strong base of telecom talent and patents, and its advantage in 5G will help it gain an advantage in the 6G research and development race, experts and executives said.
The comments come as the world approaches a critical moment in identifying technologies and developing key standards for 6G, which is expected to have much lower latency, higher speeds, and greater bandwidth than 5G, though there is no globally accepted definition of the technology yet.
More importantly, the technology will be able to support the integration of space, air, territorial and maritime communications technologies, giving rise to a wide range of innovative applications, they added.
China aims to commercialize the technology around 2030. Jin Zhuanglong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology, said, “We will launch a series of scientific projects targeting 6G, aiming for key technological breakthroughs.”
