(“VSI”) filed a data breach notification with the Texas Attorney General after discovering that an unauthorized third party had gained access to information held by the company. In the notice, VeriSource explains that the incident allowed unauthorized third parties to access sensitive information (such as names, dates of birth and social security numbers) of employees and dependents of companies that use VSI’s services. After completing its investigation, VeriSource began sending data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What caused the VeriSource Services data breach?
The VeriSource Services data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected to emerge in the near future. However, VeriSource’s filing with the Texas Attorney General provides important information about what led up to the breach. VeriSource also posted a notice about the incident on their homepage.
According to these sources, on February 28, 2024, VSI detected unusual activity within its computer network. In response, VSI secured its systems and initiated an investigation with the assistance of outside cybersecurity experts. VSI also notified the FBI.
Through its investigation, VeriSource has concluded that certain personal information of employees and employees’ dependents employed at organizations that use VSI’s services was improperly obtained on or about February 27, 2024.
After learning that sensitive consumer data had become accessible to unauthorized third parties, VeriSource Services reviewed the compromised files to determine what information had been exposed and which consumers were affected. VeriSource Services completed this process on August 12, 2024. Compromised information varies by individual but may include names, dates of birth, social security numbers, etc.
On August 21, 2024, VeriSource Services sent data breach notification letters to all individuals affected by the recent data security incident. These notification letters included a list of what victims’ information was compromised.
