Chandler, Arizona, April 4, 2024 SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Viavi Solutions Inc. (VIAVI) (NASDAQ: VIAV) today announced milestones in 6G and AI research under the company’s 6G Forward Program. As 6G is the first AI-native generation of wireless communications, data sources such as the 6G city-scale digital twin are essential to training other elements of the network, including the 6G AI-native air interface.
6G City-scale Digital Twin
In 2022, VIAVI announced its support for research at the Wireless Internet of Things Institute and the Open6G Joint Research Center. Northeastern Universitywas conducted as part of the VIAVI 6G Forward program. A key aspect of the research was large-scale RF propagation channel modeling based on AI and ML technologies to develop a city-scale digital twin of the 6G network.
Digital twin research has expanded to include:
- Using AI/ML to enhance ray tracing for radio frequency (RF) propagation modeling to drive digital twins
- Conducting a real measurement campaign Northeastern Boston Campus using VIAVI Ranger rugged RF capture and playback equipment
- Incorporating higher-layer KPIs into the digital twin will more effectively model the impact of network conditions on application performance.
“Our research collaboration Northeastern University “This research represents a breakthrough in the use of AI/ML in wireless propagation modeling,” he said. Ian Wong“We believe this research is critical to realizing large-scale network digital twins,” said the CEO of VIAVI’s CTO Office. “VIAVI has leading network emulation solutions in the lab, as well as in-field network monitoring and optimization solutions that collect data from real operator networks, so we believe this research is well within our reach.”
“Northeastern University’s Wireless Internet of Things Institute (WIoT) has been using VIAVI’s state-of-the-art test and measurement equipment to model and deploy highly accurate digital twins of real-world wireless networks on our open RAN digital twin platform, Coliseum,” said the professor. Tommaso MelodiaWIoT Director Northeastern University“This will accelerate research, development and experimentation of AI-driven solutions for 5G and beyond networks in a risk-free digital twin world with hardware in the loop.”
6G AI Native Air Interface (AI-AI)
AI-Native Air Interfaces (AI-AI) have emerged as a change in the traditional way of developing, standardizing, and commercializing communication technologies, aiming to effectively feed data to applications while addressing communication issues and hardware limitations. At the physical layer of wireless communication, the concept of neural receivers suggests replacing traditional signal processing blocks with trained AI models.
To enable comprehensive testing of neural receivers, VIAVI developed and demonstrated its own receiver as part of its end-to-end test and training environment. The base station employs AI-assisted constellation design, replacing modulation blocks with neural networks to design a custom constellation for the receiver. VIAVI’s self-developed neural receiver can generalize to different channel models and modulations, delays and Dopplers, signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), and other conditions, which are essential for deployment in real systems. VIAVI implemented the transceiver architecture using open source and in-house libraries.
“VIAVI continues to explore and develop groundbreaking next-generation wireless technologies and is at the forefront of AI-native 6G,” said Dr. Stephen Wang“From neural receivers to rate division multiple access for semantic networks, our 6G research will help the industry build networks that dynamically adapt to different environments and conditions. We look forward to collaborating with research institutions and network equipment manufacturers to accelerate the development of these technologies,” said Mike, Managing Director of VIAVI Marconi Labs.
