A new study has revealed a list of the most popular types of AI in recent months. Perhaps unsurprisingly, chatbots and AI conversation tools top the rankings of the most popular AI categories with nearly 260 million searches. Gemini AI leads the growing trend with a 3,150 percent increase year over year.
The creative AI and design tools category, ranking second with 8.5 million searches, saw the most notable spike in interest: searches like “AI art,” “AI art generator,” and “mid journey” are currently trending, with Heygen AI leading the trend in this category.
Role-playing AI chatbots took third place in the AI popularity rankings, with character AI chatbot Janitor AI topping the list in this category. Emerging trends include interest in character AI applications and search terms.
These figures are based on a study by Linkee on the most popular uses of AI. They analyzed data obtained from Google Trends, extracted all AI-related search trends, then grouped them by category and calculated the total search volume. The list includes data up to July 2024.

Looking further into the table, education tools ranks fourth with 4.6 million searches. Perplexity AI, an AI-powered research and conversational search engine, tops the category, highlighting the search trend for using AI for learning and research.
Ranked fifth, image alteration tools received 3.9 million searches, and interest in “free undressing AI tools” soared. The presence of keywords such as “free undressing AI tools,” “remaker AI face swap,” “undetectable AI,” and “undressing AI tools” indicates internet users’ concerns about privacy.
AI research and analytics tools attracted 3.25 million searches, ranking sixth. Scite AI, a platform that makes it easy for researchers to find relevant scientific papers, tops this category.
AI content creation and marketing tools ranks 7th with 2.2 million searches. The search term “AI detector” is also trending.
Neurodiversity support tools ranks 8th with 247,000 searches. Goblin AI, a collection of small, simple task tools designed to support neurodiverse people, takes the top spot. Productivity AI apps rank 9th with 62,000 monthly searches. Calendar.ai tops the category with a 256% increase in interest. Similar search terms are also trending.
