Community Benefits
One side benefit of building data centers is that Scala is also developing projects to improve urban mobility, including integrating with surrounding communities and expanding fiber optic and energy pathways.
“This expansion not only strengthens Scala’s mission to enable the future of Latin America, but also reaffirms the company’s commitment to share the economic benefits of this growth with the communities surrounding the campus,” the company said.
Scala undertakes various social initiatives within its communities, including workforce development and promoting social inclusion by directly and indirectly creating 20,000 jobs.
Focus on AI
Scala’s data center construction strategy coincides with the growing AI market: the global artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) market is expected to be worth approximately US$1.85 trillion by 2030. Investments could increase Latin America’s potential GDP growth by 5.4%, according to data from The Economist.
Scala CEO and co-founder Marcos Paigo told attendees at an event announcing the second phase that the company’s data center buildout is aimed at satisfying the growth of AI.
“Demand for data centers has increased seven to 10 times due to the rise of artificial intelligence, and we are well positioned to not only serve the local market but also export data center solutions and help solve global challenges, especially in North America,” he said.
All of the provider’s new buildings are designed to support AI/ML and address high density demands. These buildings utilize liquid cooling technology for heat dissipation, allowing densities from 24kW per rack up to 100kW per rack.
Efficiency and sustainability are key elements of Scala’s data center buildout. Scala says it is committed to maintaining its power usage effectiveness (PUE), an energy efficiency index, below 1.4 and water usage effectiveness (WUE) to zero. The adoption of renewable energy sources will further Scala’s commitment to sustainability.
