SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 20, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) today announced a new standard for “Industrial Data Communications for Automotive Manufacturing.” The new data standard, SAE/USCAR-53, establishes a common method for data communication, machine language, and reporting between manufacturing devices in an automotive production or smart manufacturing environment.
The overarching goal of the USCAR working group that developed this standard was to unlock data in isolated systems and enable data sharing and interoperability between existing brownfield and new greenfield components, subsystems and applications within and across the automotive industry.
Smart manufacturing requires a high degree of automation and integration of systems on the factory floor. The interoperability and scalability of these machines not only increase their capabilities but also optimize their performance, resulting in cost-efficient operations and a higher return on investment. However, existing systems that have evolved over decades are closed, proprietary, and incompatible in how machines communicate with each other. These incompatible systems often introduce costly delays and complications into product launches for automotive companies.
“By defining an industrial data communications standard, the USCAR team is taking an important next step in accelerating both the value and implementation of smart manufacturing across the industry, demonstrating the power of USCAR collaboration,” said Steve Przesmitzki, USCAR executive director. “Not only will this common industrial data communications standard reduce complexity and manufacturing costs for our members, it also has the potential to benefit suppliers of materials, components, systems and equipment.”
Going forward, USCAR’s Industrial Data Communications team will provide communications and training for USCAR-53. Additional information will be posted at uscar.org/uscar53/ as it becomes available.
