On August 15, 2024, Specialty Networks, Inc. issued a press release describing a recent data security incident involving a third party that gained unauthorized access to information on the company’s computer network. In the notice, Specialty Networks explained that the incident allowed unauthorized access to sensitive consumer information, including names, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, treatment and medical condition information, diagnoses, medications, and health insurance information. What caused the Specialty Networks data breach?
The Specialty Networks data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected to be released in the near future. However, Specialty Networks’ August 15, 2024 press release provides important information about what led to the breach. According to this source, on December 18, 2023, Specialty Networks detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, Specialty Networks secured its systems and engaged digital forensic experts to investigate the incident.
Through this investigation, Specialty Network learned that unauthorized actors accessed and obtained certain data stored within the system on December 11, 2023. On May 31, 2024, Specialty Network learned that some of the files accessed and obtained by unauthorized actors contained sensitive consumer information.
After Specialty Networks learned that sensitive consumer data was accessible to unauthorized third parties, it reviewed the breached files to determine what information was exposed and which consumers were affected. Specialty Networks recently completed this process. Compromised information varies by individual, but may include names, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, social security numbers, medical record numbers, treatment and medical condition information, diagnoses, medications, and health insurance information.
On June 12, 2024, Specialty Networks began notifying its commercial customers, including Prime Imaging, Diagnostic Radiology Consultants, PA, Allied Mobile, and Videre, about the incident. Then, starting on or about June 24, 2024, Specialty Networks began sending data breach notification letters to all individuals affected by the recent data security incident. These notification letters included a list of what victims’ information had been compromised.
