WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers to immediately stop using and discard Wifi/Wifi0306 Magnetic Games because dangerous loose magnets pose a risk of serious injury or death if ingested by children.
CPSC testing found that these magnets contain one or more magnets that fit within the CPSC’s small parts cylinder and exceed the allowable magnetic strength limits, thereby failing to comply with the requirements of federal mandatory regulations for magnetic toys.
When powerful magnets are swallowed, they can be attracted to each other or other metal objects and become lodged in the digestive system, potentially resulting in intestinal perforation, volvulus, blockage, infection, sepsis, and death.
The CPSC estimates that 2,400 cases of magnet ingestions were treated in hospital emergency departments from 2017 to 2021. The CPSC is aware of eight deaths associated with ingesting hazardous magnets since 2005, including two outside the United States.
The CPSC has issued a notice of violation to distributor Wifi/Wifi0306, but the company has not agreed to recall the magnet games or provide a remedy to consumers.
The game was sold in a blue box with the word “Magnetic” on the front of the box. The game contains approximately 20 black magnets, a yellow string, and a plastic drawstring bag. The front of the bag features a cartoon bear and the words “Popular Broun” and the back of the bag features the words “Especially for You.” CPSC identified the violations as a result of import surveillance. After investigating similar products, CPSC believes the Magnetic Game was being sold online at www.amazon.com for between $8 and $14.
The CPSC is urging consumers to immediately stop using magnetic games and to dispose of them out of the reach of children.
