MANILA, Philippines, Aug. 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — By 2024, over 50 major telecom operators around the world will be pioneers in the commercial use of 5G SA networks, with DITO in the Philippines being a notable example.
The Philippines is currently in a critical period of rapid digital economic development, and the rapid growth of mobile communication services also reflects this. To support the development of 5G, DITO, the third largest mobile communications operator in the Philippines, launched the Philippines’ first commercial 5G SA network in 2021. By 2024, DITO will build a fully integrated 5G SA core network, leveraging the advantages of one cloud and distributed network architecture to enable all services. DITO has also launched innovative 5G SA 2C and 2H services, and is now promoting its 5G 2B product feature set. In recent years, DITO’s user base has rapidly exceeded 10 million, demonstrating its network competitiveness and strong brand awareness.
In the early stages of network construction in 2019, DITO put forward the concept of building a network with advanced architecture, superior experience and business success. In the past three years, DTIO has successfully developed a 5G SA core network with excellent architecture and outstanding capabilities.
1. Simplified architecture for building industry-leading fully integrated core networksThe commercial use of 5G SA networks focuses on the construction of 5G SA core networks, which is difficult and time-consuming. DITO has strategically planned the target network in advance and become the first company to evolve the core network into an IP-based fully cloudified system. In addition, it has established one center-edge distributed cloud, which enables a fully integrated and simplified network for both PS and IMS services, effectively reducing the total number of NEs, lowering O&M costs and improving service experience.
2. Distributed architecture to build a distributed core network that delivers superior service experience in the Philippines: Considering the large number of islands in the Philippines, DITO strategically deployed distributed UPFs and SBCs in five major areas closer to users. This allows user traffic in each area to be processed nearby and user calls to be connected nearby, significantly reducing network latency during service access between areas. Thanks to its distributed 5GC core network, flattened transport network, ultra-high bandwidth, and multi-antenna wireless network, DITO won 13 mobile experience awards out of 15 mobile experience competition items as stated in the “Philippines Mobile Network Experience Report April 2024” published by Opensignal in April 2024.
3. Highly stable architecture for building ultra-reliable core networks with multi-level redundancyThe Philippines is prone to natural disasters, has unstable infrastructure conditions, and frequent optical fiber disconnections. To address the risk of network outages, hierarchical and multi-level reliability features are implemented in the core network. Specifically, full DC-level redundancy is provided between DCs in the area, and node-level redundancy is provided within DCs in the area for data backup and multi-channel load balancing. In addition, the core network does not rely solely on I-layer reliability, but adopts network-level redundancy, NE-level redundancy, storage bypass, and fast failure recovery features to ensure high service availability anytime and anywhere.
4. Agile architecture for building multi-purpose, multi-service core networks: To achieve rapid business monetization, the core network enables multiple services. The network enables the rapid commercialization of 4G/5G SA services for 2C users and the rapid launch of FWA series services for 2H users. The uplink capabilities of the 5G SA network and the spectrum efficiency of RedCap CPE are fully utilized, effectively boosting the prosperity of the Philippine 5G CPE industry, promoting the maturity of the Philippine 5G FWA industry, and improving the service experience of home users.
The pace of innovation is unstoppable, and DITO is currently making great strides in this strategic field. The company has successfully completed 5G VoNR validation and is currently exploring various innovative services, including 5G E2E slicing, 5G SA international roaming, 5G WLAN, and 5G enterprise private network. DITO aims to become a leading 5G SA operator offering 2C, 2H, and 2B services in the future.
As 5G technology evolves and DITO continues to make direct investments, users will be able to experience smoother and more efficient telecommunications services, which will not only drive growth in the Philippine telecommunications industry but also contribute greatly to the development of the country’s digital economy.
