KT and LG will also cooperate on global standardization of 6G systems.
South Korean telecommunications company KT and LG Electronics are jointly developing 6G transmission and full-duplex communication technology and will cooperate in global standardization of next-generation mobile phone systems.
Full duplex was introduced as part of 5G-Advanced standard Release 18 and is expected to improve spectral efficiency by allowing uplink and downlink data to be transmitted and received simultaneously over a single frequency band. KT and LG said the feature will improve spectrum efficiency by up to two times.
The two companies said they will develop wideband, full-duplex equipment that will operate at frequencies considered for 6G. They will also design, manufacture and test 6G transmitter and receiver equipment.
“Through our 6G research and development collaboration with LG Electronics, KT expects to lead the development of 6G mobile communications technology and strengthen its leadership in global standardization,” commented Jeong-sik, executive director of KT Network Research Institute. “We will do our best to secure innovative network technologies and capabilities to provide differentiated services.”
KT announced a 6G research partnership with Nokia in June, with the two companies agreeing to collaborate on developing advanced open RAN and ultra-wideband radio access technologies for 6G mobile communications.
Lee Jae-young-ho, executive director of LG Electronics’ C&M Standards Research Institute, said the company has been working on 6G research since 2019, striving to discover “core technologies” for the next standard. “Through our collaboration with KT, we hope to not only lead 6G standardization but also make a significant contribution to discovering core services,” he added.
