I am sorry but, Galaxy S24 Tough love. I thought I was being logical and right. No, I was wrong when I said that every iPhone is a better deal than Samsung’s flagship S24.
In fact, we tested the AI function, Apple Intelligence In terms of pricing, I was particularly impressed with what Samsung offers with the Galaxy S24, something that Apple doesn’t offer. iPhone 15 owner.
Why I Very mean to the Galaxy S24I don’t want to dwell on its shortcomings, that’s not the point of this story, it’s just to say that I was wrong.
But I have been very discouraged about Samsung’s software. I have more than a professional interest in it. I personally have Samsung phones and have recommended them. My father Galaxy S22. he I’m afraid to upgrade to an AI-enabled smartphoneBut I am slowly changing his mind.
Now Apple’s iOS 17 has been released and it’s amazing. It’s useful, it’s social, it’s innovative. Here are the features that Apple finally stole from Android and the ones that we wish Android would steal.
With the new Safety Check-in, contact cards, proximity sharing features, standby mode and more, it really feels like Apple has left Android behind and arrived at a thoroughly modern mobile OS.
Sure, StandBy is cool, but have you seen the AI Moon?
And then there’s AI. I was initially skeptical of AI in smartphones. In my reviews of the first AI-enabled phones, Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24 UltraI called these features silly or creepy, but then I dug deeper.
While writing TechRadar’s list of the best AI smartphones, we thoroughly tested the latest AI features. We left out the weird and unnecessary features and focused on the useful ones, and found that AI in smartphones is truly useful.
No need to wait for Apple Intelligence, the next generation of Snapdragon chips, or new large-scale language models: AI is making smartphones better today, and in terms of the AI tools I actually use, the Galaxy S24 is one of the best phones you can buy.
There are now five or six very useful AI tools on a smartphone, including AI camera enhancements, generative AI photo editing, generative AI lighting, AI voice assistants, AI language translation, and overall AI interface enhancements and suggestions.
The first AI feature on a smartphone that came to mind was Google Photos’ “Magic” photo editing feature. Photo editing tools are the most common AI feature on a smartphone, and even phone makers that eschew AI, like OnePlus, have some sort of AI photo editing feature.
There are also AI tools to assist the camera, and Samsung has previously used AI for scene optimization in its camera app. The incredible AI moon photos you can take with the Galaxy S24 Ultra have perfect exposure and color settings, thanks to AI that identifies the subject and adjusts accordingly.
Even though the cheaper Galaxy S24 doesn’t have the same zoom lens as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it does have AI to help it out, and intelligent shooting modes make the Samsung camera more fun. Photos tend to look better with a Galaxy smartphone, especially food photos and long-distance shots.
While generative writing is much newer than photography AI tools, AI can rewrite your writing in a new style. Ask Samsung’s Galaxy AI to rewrite an email and it’ll give you options like a formal tone, a casual one, or an emoji-heavy one.
The Google Pixel 8 can do the same thing, but the Samsung Galaxy S24 does a much better job of rewriting messages. While the Pixel often produced messages I found embarrassing, Samsung’s AI was useful enough that I used its suggestions to avoid being too terse in personal messages or to embarrass my teenagers.
Samsung becomes leader in smartphone AI
So far, Samsung has a big lead. AI tools, especially large-scale language models, seem to be developing by leaps and bounds. If Samsung has a lead now, it may be able to extend it further as the AI models evolve in the Galaxy AI.
One feature that probably needs more AI is Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant, although when I tested it… Bixby to compete with Siri and Google’s GeminiIn the 2000s, Bixby was already the most effective voice assistant. Although Samsung calls it an “AI,” it was invented before today’s advances in large-scale language models. Still, it’s far ahead of the competition and has plenty of room to improve technologically.
That means Samsung has the best voice assistant, the best AI writing tool, and the best AI camera extensions. We test different AI language translations on smartphones to see which one is best, but a Samsung representative told us the Galaxy AI can translate between 16 different languages. Google’s Pixel Live Translate can only handle about a dozen languages.
For now, Apple has ceded the AI leadership to Samsung…
Samsung’s Galaxy AI features aren’t just available on the latest Galaxy S24 series. Galaxy S23 or the Galaxy S22. Most of the new AI features will be available on the 2023 and 2022 Galaxy Z foldable phones and the Galaxy Tab S8. Galaxy Tab S9 Tablets from the past two years.
This is an incredible level of support, especially compared to the competition.
This is where Samsung changed my mind, or rather, when Apple announced Apple Intelligence and said new features would only be available on iPhones. iPhone 15 Pro And it got even better.
As far as we know, if you buy Apple’s latest iPhone model, the iPhone 15, today, you won’t get the new Apple Intelligence features.
Are the tables finally turning? Samsung already offers seven years of major OS updates for its latest smartphones; Apple only offers five, and you’ll be missing out on anything really cool unless you spend at least $999/£949/AU$1,849 on the iPhone 15 Pro.
The one everyone is talking about: Apple’s WWDC 2024, Google I/O 2024, and Samsung’s 2024 developer party.
If you’re buying a new phone today and are interested in AI features, we don’t recommend buying the iPhone 15 or any of the older iPhone models that Apple still sells. Buy the Galaxy S24 instead.
